The White House says President Obama picked up the check for dinner tonight -- out of his own pocket -- at the swanky Jefferson Hotel near the White House where he dined with Senate Republicans as part of what's being described as a charm offensive to refute suggestions he doesn't schmooze with Congress.
A senior administration official said Obama "greatly enjoyed the dinner and had a good exchange of ideas with the Senators."
The attendees included senators Lindsey Graham, Bob Corker, Kelly Ayotte, John McCain, Dan Coats, Tom Coburn, Richard Burr, Mike Johanns, Pat Toomey, Ron Johnson, John Hoeven and Saxby Chambliss.
McCain walked out of dinner two hours after it started and gave a reporter who asked how the dinner was a thumbs-up. Coburn gave the same gesture -- a thumbs up.
