First lady Michelle Obama will attend the funeral of 15-year-old shooting victim Hadiya Pendleton in Chicago Saturday, according to a White House official.
Senior Adviser Valerie Jarrett and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will also attend. Gov. Pat Quinn will speak.
Pendleton, an honors student, was shot last week about a mile from the Obamas’ home days after she had attended inaugural festivities near Washington.
Chicago activists encouraged the first family to speak out about recent violence in Chicago after the shooting, and a petition had called on them to attend Pendleton’s funeral.
