Hagel, to be nominated for defense secretary, gets support from Jewish group

Chuck Hagel, President Obama's pick for secretary of defense, received the backing of the National Jewish Democratic Council Monday despite concerns about his committment to Israel.

"President Barack Obama's unprecedented pro-Israel credentials are unquestionable, and setting policy starts and stops with the president," the group said in a statement. "While we have expressed concerns in the past, we trust that when confirmed, former Senator Chuck Hagel will follow the president's lead of providing unrivaled support for Israel -- on strategic cooperation, missile defense programs, and leading the world against Iran's nuclear program."

Obama will announce Hagel's selection Monday afternoon at the White House. He is also expected to unveil his choice for Central Intelligence Agency director -- John Brennan. Brennan would replace David Petraeus, who resigned after the discovery that he had an affair.
