Congressional Republicans on Friday named their members to a presidential commission on the budget deficit.
Senate Republicans named Sens. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire, Mike Crapo of Idaho and Tom Coburn of Oklahoma.
House Republicans named: Reps. Dave Camp of Michigan, Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and Jeb Hensarling of Texas.
“Americans are rightly concerned about the growth of government, while the rest of the country has been tightening their belts,” said Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the Republican leader in the Senate.
“Sens. Gregg, Crapo, and Coburn are serious defenders of the taxpayer, and I am confident they will provide commonsense recommendations to reduce Washington spending.”
Said Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, the Republican leader in the House: “Our nation is in a fiscal crisis and our future depends on stopping the spending spree in Washington that is saddling our children and grandchildren with trillions of dollars in debt. As leading fiscal conservatives, Dave Camp, Paul Ryan, and Jeb Hensarling know what it takes to address our long-term challenges while protecting taxpayers.”
White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs welcomed the appointments.
“It’s a positive development for the commission that while there was some concern about whether Republicans would put forward names they now have, and I think that’s an important and a positive development, we think and hope that the rest of those names will be coming forward soon,” Gibbs said.
“Our strong hope is that in the next few weeks, not only will the commission be filled out but we’ll have staff in place and that the commission can meet soon in order to generate recommendations, hopefully that Congress can act on quickly.”
