The American electorate is fed up with Congress, according to a new Marist Institute for Public Opinion nationwide poll released Monday.

Forty-four percent said they would vote for someone other than the incumbent lawmaker in November, while 42 percent said they would prefer the incumbent. 14 percent are uncertain. The poll surveyed 1,072 people from Feb. 1 to 3. Margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Though Democrats hold sizeable majorities in both Houses, neither political party escapes the public's wrath. 51 percent of Democrats said they'd return the incumbent, while 35 percent wanted someone else. Among Republicans, 45 percent preferred the current office-holder while 48 percent wanted a new face.

But here's the scariest news for incumbents: Among independents, 34 percent liked the incumbent while 50 percent wanted someone else.

The reason, said the poll, was people see the election as a chance to make a statement. 56 percent said they wanted to send Washington a message with their vote.

Of the message-sendings, one-third want Democrats to get that message, while 21 percent see it directed at President Barack Obama and 18 percent want it targeted to Republicans. 29 percent want everyone to pay attention.
