139 pages of the amendment was enough

The Senate's already-slow effort to consider major health care legislation hit a new snag Wednesday: Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., insisting on having all 767 pages of an amendment offered by Sen. Bernard Sanders, Ind.-Vt, read on the Senate floor.

Such a reading could delay the bill even further, and become a problem for Democrats who want to take a final vote by Christmas.

After 139 pages and three hours--it took about 15 minutes just to read the table of contents--Sanders withdrew the amendment, with a blast: "People can have honest disagreements, but in this moment of crisis it is wrong to bring the United States government to a halt."

Republicans would not say if they will use the tactic in the near future.
