Feingold flatters; Sotomayor flatters back, to a point
Sonia Sotomayor knows how to gently woo the senators who will determine whether she sits on the U.S. Supreme Court. But not too much.
During her confirmation hearing Tuesday, Sen. Russell Feingold, D-Wisc., told the nominee "how much I'm enjoying listening to you, both your manner and your obvious tremendous knowledge and undestanding of the law."
In fact, he said, "I'm enjoying it so much that I hope when you go into these deliberations about cameras in the courtroom, that you consider the possibility that I and other Americans would like the opportunity to observe your skills for many years to come in the comfort of our family rooms and living rooms."
Flattery, Sotomayor suggested, will eventually get Feingold nowhere_but she was more judicious than to say that.
"You're a very good lawyer," she said, "Weren't you, senator?"
