The men's basketball team that will represent the United States in the Beijing Olympics opened a five-day training camp Monday at Las Vegas.
Tayshaun Prince, the former Kentucky Wildcat who has played all six of his pro seasons for the Detroit Pistons, thinks this team has what it takes. Team USA's last three major international tounaments resulted in a sixth place (2002 World Championships) and a pair of bronze-medal finishes (2004 Olympics, 2006 Worlds).
"It's just a matter of us going out, playing hard, being aggressive, communicating," Prince said after Monday's practice. "We have the guys that are able to get it done. We just have to do what it takes, and I feel after today's practice that we're headed in the right direction."
Prince, when asked how the team-oriented 2008 team might fare against the original Dream Team: "You can't duplicate what the 1992 Dream Team did. That's why they were named the Dream Team. ... What we can do is establish ourselves and make a name for ourselves and what we're doing, what we're trying to get accomplished. Hopefully, if things go the way we want and the way we plan, (that will) make a name for us one day."
Workouts continue through Friday, concluding with a scrimmage against Canada.
