A federal #judge hammered #Iran with a $2.1 billion judgment for the country's support of the 1983 terror bombing of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut.
In his latest, 13-page opinion of long-running and multi-faceted litigation, U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth awarded injured Marines and family members $486 million in compensatory damages and $1.6 billion in punitive damages. Iran and its Ministry of Information and Security provided "material and technical support" to the Hezbollah operatives who conducted the attack, Judge Lamberth previously found.
But, in an interesting restriction, Judge Lamberth also declined to award payments to children who hadn't yet been born at the time of the 1983 attack.
"This horrific and cowardly act impacted countless individuals and their families," Judge Lamberth wrote.
