The Sotomayor hearings: It's on

Literally, on. The Web, that is; There being multiple locations for viewing the Sonia Sotomayor confirmation hearings. Just because it's in close proximity to the documents submitted on her behalf, the Senate Judiciary Committee's live streaming web site is good bet.

Notwithstanding Senator Sessions' insistence that the confirmation is not a foregone conclusion, the confirmation is a foregone conclusion. Still, there are always features to look for. Randomly speaking, these include:

1. How many times does firefighter Frank Ricci's name get mentioned Monday?

2. How many times do senators say "thank you for your service" to Ricci when he testifies?

3. Which senator will ask the most self-consciously complex constitutional question? Suits & Sentences says, always bet on Sen. Arlen Specter.

4. Which Democrat will ask interesting and probing questions, and then show a capacity to follow up? Suits & Sentences says: Always bet on Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island and Sen. Russell Feingold of Wisconsin.

5. Which senator will win the Folksy Award? Suits & Sentences says: Always bet on Sen. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina.

6. How many times will Republicans mention the Second Amendment?

7. How many times will Democrats mention the term "numchucks," or a variation thereof?

8. When will the first Republican announce support for Sotomayor, and who will it be? Best bets: retiring Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida and Rep. Richard Lugar of Indiana?

9. How late will the witness hearing drag on Thursday, and will Ricci be stuck testifying at an obscure hour. Suits & Sentences says: Hearing will go to an unnecessarily late hour Thursday, but Democrats won't dare try burying Ricci in the middle of the night.

10. How funny and how scripted will Sen. Al Franken seem? Partial answer: not funny at all.

11. As most junior member, Franken will ask his questions after everyone else. Meaning: everything will have already been asked. Will he be prepared to go off-road a bit, show spontaneous curiosity, or will the script hold him tight?
