Sotomayor explains her heavy use of facts in opinions -- a matter of interest to a small, appellate-decision reading population -- as an outgrowth of her work as a prosecutor and a trial judge. In fact, she says, she is much like David Souter in this regard.

So far, Sotomayor has summoned forth on her own behalf Republican nominees Sandra Day O'Connor, Samuel Alito and David Souter.

Tossed an open-ended invitation to talk about her work as a prosecutor, including the tough charging decisions that must be made, Sotomayor cites to the television show Perry Mason.

The question also permits Sotomayor to say of herself that she was known for bringing tough charges while serving as a prosecutor. Then, to show her balance, she invokes a case in which she determined not to pursue a charge against a young man.

Tough but fair, that's her.

Two more senators will question Sotomayor before the lunch break commences, after which the committee will go into closed session for a while.

Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar reveals some of her intrafamily dynamics, saying her mother was most impressed by Sen. Dianne Feinstein's performance Tuesday and so she wondered: would Klobuchar do as well?

Let's hear it for Sideline Senate Moms!
