Haaretz has a long feature in its weekend magazine on Arab women raised with Israeli chutzpah.

The feature focuses on Lucy Aharish, an up-and-coming 28-year-old Arab-Israeli television personality who is said to be part of a new generation of Arabs in Israel holding prominent jobs in the media.

 "There is a new generation of Arabs who don't give a hoot what anyone thinks and will do everything they can to get into high positions," Aharish says in the article. "We have other things to get over besides the occupation and discrimination. We are fighters and don't give in. If you don't open the door for me, I will come in through the window, and if it is closed, down the chimney. We were too polite, but we learned Israeli chutzpah. It's easy to humiliate an Arab who kowtows, but when that person says 'Listen, pal, tone it down, don't talk to me like that,' you arrive at a dialogue."

The story has extensive detail on Aharish's life as an entertainment reporter.

"Hebrew is my mother tongue," Aharish says. "Our parents knew we would get a better education in Jewish schools and that it would open more doors for us. In school I learned Oral Torah and Bible, not Arabic language and literature. We celebrated all the holidays: welcoming the Shabbat in kindergarten and then going to Nazareth for Id al-Fitr. The Pesach Seder with our neighbors, Menahem and Haya, and the next day the Ramadan fast."

"What's more important for me is the brand name Lucy Aharish," she says. "The Arab sector does not pay me a salary. It's above all my personal war, but it also helps my society."
