A picture might worth one million words. A picture doesn't exaggerate or underestimate truth.
The following pictures are for McClatchy old office at Hamra Hotel where the explosion happened on Jan. 25 afternoon. This is the place where our company used to work since 2003.
The reporters room. I usually sit exactly beside the glass window because I always like to look at the flowers I grow.
I took this picture for the reporters' room from the small balcony of the office . The explosion took place almost in front of the balcony. The small balcony did not give me enough space to cover the whole office. My deskwas just at the place of the TV. My death was almost certain. if it was not by the explosion, it would be by the flying glass shrapnel which would be flying death that harvest the lives it faces.
This room used to be our living room where we have meals. The TV survived from the explosion because it was protected by the wall. The blast dis-joined the aluminum window into two parts. Can anyone imagine the huge and massive power of the blast!!

Just for today I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticize not one bit,and try not to improve or regulate anybody but myself.

This is terrible. How can you live everyday knowing your safety is at risk.

Awfully scary. I'm glad you are okay.
You guys need to invest in blast film -- we had it in Afghanistan (I was the country director for an NGO there). It's not cheap, but I understand that most people are injured or killed by flying glass in an explosion. A good NGO security person can tell you of things you can buy to protect yourself without isolating yourself from the population, and blast film is one of them.

Envisioning those rooms full of busy people, and then chaos. Thank heavens this did not happen to you. And how terrible, that in other rooms, there were people, who were not as fortunate. The hatred of those who bomb is hard enough to understand: the willingness of others to buy non-functional 'bomb detectors' at exorbitant rates paid for by the people of Iraq is impossible to grasp. Can any amount of money be worth the death and suffering of innocents? Stay safe, dear McC (and CSM!) staff.
