It's the last day, just a few hours until the result of presidential election is known, but even so David Coverdale of Whitesnake wants it known that in no way is it ok with him that John McCain played his song "Here I Go Again" at an Election Day rally.
According to Coverdale's long-time producer, Michael McIntyre, Coverdale heard the song while watching CNN in London. He asked McIntyre to get the word out.
"I must respectfully object to having my music misappropriated for a political campaign that I do not personally support," Coverdale wrote, according to McIntyre. "I am delighted to add that this election is my first voting experience as a brand new citizen of the United States of America. I voted for, & fully support, the Democratic representative, Senator Barak Obama, & believe in my heart & soul that he will best represent these United States in the most profound & fulfilling way."
McIntyre said he doesn't know if McCain might have sought permission to play the song — like most artists, Coverdale's catalogue is managed by someone else — but Coverdale was particularly offended as an Obama supporter.
"He's been an Obama supporter for a long time," McIntyre said. Legal action is unlikely, given that the election is ending — and possibly badly for McCain. "I talked to David's attorney and he said because it was used at a rally, and not in a TV ad, there's not much you can do about it."
"Here I go Again" was included on Whitesnake's 1987 album Whitesnake. Here's a YouTube video of Coverdale performing the song.
A look out how Obama and McCain have used music in their campaign can be found here and here.
Whitesnake joins the large crowd of musicians peeved at the McCains using their songs.
It's legal to use them, but it shows the POW's lack of respect of the artists, and the few that support the GOP.
