Virginia hasn't given its electoral votes to a Democratic presidential candidate since it went for Lyndon Johnson in 1964, but new polls show Barack Obama leading John McCain.
Three, from Rasmussen Reports, Marist Institute for Public Opinion and National Journal, put the Democratic nominee up by 4 percentage points, while a CNN/Time survey has him leading by 9. CNN's analysis said Obama had a "strong lead."
But the New York-based Marist said in its latest survey, released Thursday, that Virginia remains a "competitive contest."
It put Obama ahead by 4 percentage points among likely voters, including those who are undecided but leaning toward a candidate.
But Republican nominee McCain is well-regarded and has support among independents. While 61 percent of all voters see Obama in a positive way, some 51 percent see McCain that way.
