Obama campaign senior strategist Robert Gibbs predicted this morning that John McCain will change his mind after all and show up tomorrow in Mississippi for the first scheduled presidential debate, rather than skip it to concentrate on the financial industry bailout. "I believe the debate's going to happen as scheduled," Gibbs told reporters at a breakfast meeting hosted by the Christian Science Monitor. "I actually think he's going to come to the debate," Gibbs said of McCain. "I think he will decide a president is capable of doing more than one thing at a time." In any event, Gibbs said, Barack Obama will be there. Gibbs acknowledlged the debate commission has not told the Obama folks that the event would go on if McCain were a no-show. However, Gibbs said, "The commission has not talked to us in any way about changing what is planned to happen Friday. They have not made any plans not for it to go ahead." No details on how Obama might be preparing for a one-man debate.

McCain said: No Mortgage Deal, No Debate.
If Obama shows up alone he is going to look very, very, very, foolish and unPresidential.

M.Simon,
I disagree with you. Obama showing to the agreed upon debate isn't foolish.
If McCain's not there, then he might have an 'economy' speech prepared to deliver to the 60,000,000 household TV audience.
Simpleton, if a president can't handle surprises - though, with McCain's 3 day notice his cowering won't be a surprise - then he's applying for the wrong job.
McCain lost this gamble.

All McCain has to do is send in the vice pitt bull.

This a big misstep by McCain.
His logic of helping sort out the financial collapse on Wall Street will NOT play on Main Street. The reality is that if you don't show up for the debate it is like missing a job interview. He is trying to ACT Presidential, but he is not the President. The nuance of this move is lost on the masses. He looks scared, not presidential.
I HOPE he does not show up just to prove that he is "McCain in the Membrane".

1mccain has missed all vots and has released no bills on topic 2 it is not for mccain and obama to solve there are special banking commitee people on it all candidates have to do is vote3 it is settled already 4 obama called mccain to come up with joint stance mccain said yes get back to you on details but instead mccain realeases a announcement posturing that he is only serious one and bush should tell obama to come to special meeting, this is nonsense and even gop sees this as desperate gamble
