A day after the Secret Service effectively announced to the world that the Republican-nominee-in-waiting, John McCain, does not have Secret Service protection, it now appears McCain soon will have Secret Service protection.
The campaign is expected to meet soon with Secret Service officials to discuss protection. McCain has long been wary of entering any kind of protective bubble, vowing to put it off as long as he can. And he insists he'll get around Washington, if elected, with a driver and an agent in an armored SUV.
McCain aides had asked reporters covering the campaign to not report his lack of protection, fearing publicity would attract the crazies. Reporters had agreed. When Secret Service head Mark Sullivan publicly testified in Congress Thursday that McCain, unlike Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, lacked protection, the jig was up.
The challenge for McCain and his aides will be ensuring his singular style isn't lost in the bubble.
