Where has my dream house gone? A block of Beijing disappears

IMG_0556

On my walk to the subway station in the mornings I've been watching this block -- just off from the Bell and Drum Towers -- disappear.  I wandered closer yesterday to the only building left standing in the center, which turned out to be a public bathroom. The sign here explains that due to recent demolition the utilities for the toilets have been shut off, and advises people to use others in the area.

I lingered for a bit, snapping photos and wondering what would come next as Beijing continues to push forward.

(This area is to the north of my neighborhood, which I blogged about recently: A ruckus in the hutong.)

Bwahaha! We can make a lot more than a block of Bejing disappear with one well placed nuclear weapon. Don't you love it when a hawkish conservative (that would be me) invades the comments board of a nice little liberal news site like McClatchy?

Ma Kai

This is indeed a great place to shop for footwear!
