I agree. Jordan is rather schizo. Jordan and it's billboards and bumper stickers of the King and Queen Rania reminded me a lot of Iraq with it's monuments and billboards in honor of Saddam Hussein (during his reign).

I don't begrudge the King's western education and grasp of English - the Arab world needs more of these kind of communicators, but you're right in that for all the King's and Queen's good English, they're not using it for much good.

Don't you find this behavior has held true since the Hashemite kingdom was formed about 6 decades ago? They've sold out over and over.

Hannah, I share a lot of your observations and sentiments about Jordan. Good article!

I was living in Jordan, working on "honor" killings, when Queen Rania appeared on "Oprah." My friends back home sent me an Internet link to the transcript and some of the video from it, and I was really disappointed in Oprah and her producers for letting their venue be used to propagate an image of Jordan that simply isn't representative of the reality on the ground. The gym-going, takeaway pizza- snarfing ladies of Abdoun and Shmeisani are hardly typical. And the irony of Queen Rania showing only this side of her country to Americans and then lamenting the lack of understanding on both sides wasn't lost on me. Unfortunately, I'm afraid she only added to the confusion with that appearance.

I recently conducted an in-depth nationwide public opinion survey on "honor" killings in Jordan, about which I later wrote a book. I surveyed young and old, educated and not, rich and poor, Muslim and Christian, men and women, East Bankers and West Bankers, sedentary and nomadic, and residents of cities, towns, villages, refugee camps, and Bedouin tents. In my representative sample, 89% of the respondents already support stiffer penalties for "honor" killings. Another 3.5% don't care one way or another. The remaining 7.5% prefer the status quo. There is already overwhelming support for overturning the three penal code articles that offer such leniency to the perpetrators that the average sentence is six months.

It's not even a close call.
This was just one of approximately 80 variables in my study, but all fairly consistently and compellingly pointed to the public's readiness for change. Some even long for it.

Based on the empirical evidence, "open dialogue" isn't what is needed. People have been talking for yonks now. What is needed is action, legal reform, a network of safehouses and shelters, inter alia. The people already support change, but the leadership seems to be lagging far behind.

I personally presented my research findings to members of the royal family and to the leadership of both houses of Parliament. Copies of my book are in the royal court, many government and embassy offices, assorted NGOs and multilateral institutions, and elsewhere.

I hope, when people in positions of authority in Jordan have time to digest the findings, they will summon the courage and the will to do the right thing, once and for all. Time's a'wastin'. People are dying. It's an emergency. There is just no valid excuse for the continued slaughter of (mostly) girls and women for this reason.
