You have so eloquently stated the thoughts I have had so often on the same issues. And I have so often felt like I was standing alone on a windy plain. I am a veteran who lives across the street from a Veterans Hospital. But have I ever gone across that street to visit someone or take some small gift to cheer their day? I am ashamed to say, "I have not." But thanks for removing my blinders. I will do. . .
God bless

A good article that makes a number of valid points. I take issue with two of them.

Under Lesson #3 he neglects to mention that most of the iraqi casulaties were inflicted by iraqis and Al Queda. He also neglected to acknowledge that regardless of whether the U.S. was right or wrong in going into Iraq Saddam Hussein can no longer commit mass-murder of his citizens.

Re. Lesson #6: I can't agree to taking in potentially two-million iraqi refugees. The american "life-boat" has been filled to over-flowing for decades. An article in the _Economist_ conjectured that, long-term, the U.S. could support about 200-million people. I agree with that assessment. --signed, a retired soldier

I would have to agree with Jeff. The failure to mention that the majority of those Iraqi civilians killed were at the hands of terrorists, not insurgents (and yes there is a big difference).
As a Former Marine from the 1990's I would have to say that the people that are the most anti-war are Marines, we really don't want to go and get shot at, but at the same time we are the ones that are asked to go around the world and protect America's Freedoms, Liberties, and her interests; and we are the ones that understand that there really are things worth fighting for. And although the left likes to say that "Violence is Never the Answer" unfortunately sometimes it is the only solution!
For all of you out there that say we should not have gone to Iraq at all I would ask you to check out http://iraqandbeyond.com I have no affiliation with them, but it is very insightful.

I feel that one lesson wasn’t covered very well.
Lesson one should be that war is WAR. It’s the end of all things. Diplomacy did not work, threats didn’t work, and closing your ports didn’t work. Talk, talk and more talk didn’t work.

War is the result that diplomacy failed. War is the last step.
When the President decides that war is the only answer left on the table.
Let the people that are paid to kill others and blow things up do their jobs.
Apparently they’re very good at it; we hired them to do it.
Let them go in and blow things up and kill as many people and disrupt as many lives as they can in the shortest amount of time until the other side finally says, Enough is enough and NOW we’re ready to sit down.
I know this sounds repugnant but that my friend IS the price of war.
The talk about surgical strikes and pissing and bemoaning the fact that innocent people died, I’m sorry but again, that is the price you pay when you declare war.
Once the diplomats have tossed up their hands in despair and say there is only one other way and that my friend is war.
The politicians and pundits and diplomats should now keep out of the way and let the professional war fighters and do their job.
Their job again is to rein terror, death and destruction on the people that our policy makers have deemed it necessary.

Our war fighters should not ever have to stop and make a second guess about “Oh is this going to piss off congress, will this make the president look bad? Oh I wonder how the popularity polls are going.

That my friend is total BS our men and woman are there for one thing and one thing only and that’s to make the Government of that country sit down once and for all and do exactly what we want them to do.
All war is unfortunate and vile. But it’s even viler when you send your best warfighters into harms way and then hamstring them so they can’t do the JOB they’re hired for

Ahahahaha! Yeah, I think I'd rather hear from spam comments than from warmongers as well.

Hope your retirement is as fun as mine has been so far.
