Today was the second Friday in a row with no reported violence. Below are scenes from across Iraq. Enjoy.
Basrawi musicians jam in their shops after years of music being a forbidden joy in this port city.
Women eat out at a restaurant on the water in the port city of Basra.
Little girls finish washing for Friday prayers in Sadr City.
A little girl stands at the edge of a lake of sewage in a poor Shiite area of Basra.
Ice vendors saw off chunks of ice and sell them in the summer heat.

It is nice to see Iraqi faces that are not contorted by fear, pain, and grief. I often wonder about the magnitude of Iraqi casualties that cannot be quantified in morgues or hospitals. I mean the children.
Childhood is such a special time for sorting out the world and learning to understand it. It is so rich with feeling and emotion. The brain is literally wiring itself, the synapses are learning to fire for everything from language, to fine motor skills, to hand-eye coordination. Sight and sound are so important to a child's growth.
What sights and sounds have been imprinted on the two girls? On the infants on their mothers' laps? There are childhood casualties in this war that seem unbearably cruel to me. So many innocent lives have been maimed.

I can't believe the sewage! How can people live in a healthy manner around an open sewer? Wasn't Bush and his cabal going to fix the infrastructure problems?? What are the contractors, besides the mercenaries, doing there?
